Sage gardens
Urban Agriculture at SAGE
The Sweet Auburn Green & Equitable (SAGE) Initiative uses urban agriculture as a tool for food access, education, environmental stewardship, and community connection. Our gardens are designed to do more than grow food they create shared spaces where residents, students, seniors, and neighbors come together to learn, heal, and build a more resilient Sweet Auburn.
Across the neighborhood, SAGE stewards a network of gardens that support hands-on learning, local food production, and opportunities for community participation at every level.
Our Garden Sites
Pollinator Garden:
This garden supports bees, butterflies, and other essential pollinators that help sustain healthy food systems. Designed with native plants and flowering species, the pollinator garden serves as an educational space focused on biodiversity, environmental sustainability, and climate resilience. The pollinator garden includes five active beehives that collectively produce approximately 350 pounds of honey each year, supporting local pollination while creating opportunities for education, community engagement, and SAGE programming.
Herb Garden at Marie Cowser Park:
The herb garden grows culinary and medicinal herbs used in community programming, workshops, and food distribution. This space introduces participants to plant care, harvesting, and the cultural uses of herbs across generations.
Water Tower Community Garden:
The Water Tower Garden is our primary resident-led community garden, featuring individual garden beds managed by community members.
Participants–referred to as growers–are supported through shared workdays, seasonal planting sessions, and guidance from experienced garden leaders. This garden prioritizes access for neighborhood residents and creates opportunities for families, seniors, and first-time gardeners to grown their own food.
