Elevating Sweet Auburn, One Step at a Time
At SAGE, we’re committed to revitalizing Sweet Auburn while preserving its rich history and culture. By working closely with community members, local businesses, and partners, we’re making a tangible impact on the neighborhood.
Since 2022 here’s how we’ve made a difference:
Self Sufficiency
The Self Sufficiency Roundtable reconvenned in January of 2025. The roundtable has been able to engage over 30 partner organizations and is continuously working together to support our unhoused neighbors
Promoted Economic Development
Fostered a thriving local economy by supporting small businesses, attracting new investment, and creating jobs.
Providied 5 technical assistance grants to local businesses to strengthen the economic vitality of Sweet Auburn.
Improved the financial well-being of 18 low-income residents, strengthening the economic resilience of our community.
Provided affordable retail and commercial space for 3 businesses operating in Sweet Auburn
Urban Agriculture
Established four gardens in Sweet Auburn, including a pollinator garden, the Marie Cowser herb garden, a community garden at the water tower, and a production garden on the Front Porch rooftop. The pollinator garden includes five beehives that will produce more than 350 pounds of honey annually. The community garden currently serves over 30 households, with a waiting list of more than 50 families. Together, the gardens have produced over 750 pounds of fresh produce, improving food access and supporting local businesses with locally grown food.
Arts
Honored the rich history of Herndon Plaza by curating 3 art exhibitions that celebrated the neighborhood’s past and present, enhancing the building’s cultural significance. The latest, Iconoclast is a window installation spotlighting 6 of Sweet Auburn’s most influential Black figures.
Microgrant and Microloans
The SAGE Microgrant and Microloan Programs support small businesses, creatives, and entrepreneurs in Sweet Auburn by expanding access to capital and business support. To date, SAGE has awarded 5 microgrants to help local businesses strengthen operations and grow. Launching in early 2026, the SAGE Microloan Program will provide affordable capital and technical assistance to advance long-term sustainability, job creation, and inclusive economic growth in the district.
